The Value of Technique in Contemporary Craft - Daniel K. Randall

As the arts and crafts fields move continually forward past conventions in thinking and working are inevitably challenged.  This can be considered entirely normal for any creative endeavor which reflects changes in culture, society and technology.  The intelligent and informed discussion of these changes and their effect on our chosen field will help us to understand our place in the context of a contemporary world.  This essay is meant simply as a primer for discussion.  It is not my intent to draw conclusions but rather share my opinion in a forum which can be considered and challenged by my peers.  

The Value of Technique in Contemporary Craft

Throughout history the crafts fields have always focused on the importance of technical ability.  A craftsperson’s knowledge of material and technique was the defining factor of their success.  Their technical skill was the basis for their ability to gain employment and support themselves through their work. 
As all fields of craft (metal, textile, ceramic, wood, glass) incorporate approaches to concept, material and technology the importance of traditional skill may come into question.   The trend towards purely conceptual modes of making, the exploration of materials such as plastics and the use of CAD technologies may challenge the need for an education in traditional techniques.  
One might argue that a working practice focused on technical skill will hinder the creative potential of an individual.  A “how to” approach to a material will eliminate the experimentation and trial and error which can result in new discoveries for the potential of materials and processes.
On the other hand one could argue that a working practice which is completely experimental in nature lacks the skilled use of material which has long been considered the defining factor of craft.  At the same time these works may lack the total freedom from material constraints which could define it as fine art. 
I believe that all approaches to work are valuable.  The precise execution of technical skill carries the traditions of craftsmanship and knowledge which have been developed over the course of human history.  The free experimentation with material, technique and concept pushes the field into new areas of investigation and challenges conventions which have become commonplace.
However, like any language, the ability to convey information or express your thoughts is directly affected by your vocabulary.  Without a sufficient vocabulary to describe your thoughts and emotions it is impossible to convey your intended meaning to others.  In the case of the crafts this vocabulary is made up of the individuals understanding of material properties, tools and techniques.  The broader your knowledge the more fluent you are and the more clearly you can communicate.   Once a foundation of technical knowledge has been developed the individual can pursue any form of work be it technical or conceptual.  The skill the individual has acquired simply facilitates the execution of their intent.
